Virtual, May 6, 2021 –

Dr. Swati Mohan will be serving as the Chief Guest of Hindu Students Council’s (HSC) Annual Hindu Commencement Ceremony. The ceremony will be held on Sunday, June 6 and will be broadcast live by HSC on Facebook and Youtube.

Dr. Mohan, an aerospace engineer and the Guidance and Controls Operations Lead on the NASA Mars 2020 mission, was selected to give this historic speech because she is a proud Hindu American and an inspiration to many young Hindus. As a former HSC Cornell University Chapter Officer who continues to confidently emphasize her Hindu values, she exemplifies what it means to be a Hindu American leader.
“When I saw Swati ji wearing the sacred bindi while working in the NASA’s command center, I was awed. After hearing so many stories of Hindu students being bullied for wearing the bindi, seeing her represent our community in one of the most prestigious roles in America so proudly was incredible,” commented Samyuktha Ramanan, Senior at Lynbrook High School and President of Lynbrook’s HSC chapter.

“This admiration quadrupled when I learned that she was an HSC alumni, as I am currently an HSC member with a passion in physics. She set a groundbreaking precedent for Hindu-American women in aeronautics and inspires me to keep a strong hold on my culture regardless of which field I enter,” Ramanan added.

Students graduating in the Class of 2021 at all levels of education who have registered for the event will have their names read during the ceremony. HSC has invited parents, family, friends, and the broader community to register and attend the ceremony.
The program includes offerings of Hindu prayers, recitation of a traditional graduation message from the Upanishads, and a symbolic conferral of degrees to high school and college graduates. Dr. Mohan will headline the ceremony with an inspirational commencement address.

Other famous persons who were members or officers of HSC chapters include the first chief information officer, Vivek Kundra; former Miss USA, Nina Nina Davuluri; Author, Aditi Banerjee; Vamsee Pamula; and Author, Deepa Prahalad.

Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard delivered the Commencement Address at HSC’s historic inaugural Hindu Commencement in 2020. Her address touched on the importance of selfless service – karma yoga – as graduating students entered the next phase of their life.

Founded in 1990, Hindu Students Council is North America’s largest pan-Hindu youth organization. HSC is a 501(c)3 non-profit providing a safe space for Hindus on campuses all over and is a platform for young Hindu leaders to learn, grow and engage in advocacy, empowerment and seva. Over 200,000 students of various backgrounds have attended HSC’s programs since its founding.
