Statement on anti-Semitism at Rutgers

April 18, 2021

Hindu Students Council stands in solidarity with the Jewish community at Rutgers, and we stand firmly against anti-Semitism in all forms.

Last week, a Rutgers fraternity held Yom HaShoah – Holocaust Remembrance Day – to read and honor the names of victims of the Holocaust. The fraternity house was vandalized by individuals who threw eggs at the house during the event.

We are saddened at this violence towards Jewish students at Rutgers, and we stand firmly in support as allies to the Jewish community in this anti-Semitic encounter.

Yom HaShoah should remind all of us of the trauma that the Jewish community has suffered – and continues to suffer – to this day. While the world has come a long way in recognizing anti-Semitism, encounters such as this one at Rutgers serve as a reminder that anti-Semitism is still highly prevalent in our communities. This incident on Yom HaShoah is particularly troubling because it speaks to a mindset that seeks to deny the trauma resulting from one of the largest genocides in modern history.

That this should happen on a college campus, which is supposed to be a safe space for students, should concern us all. In fact, an anonymous student post on the “jewishoncampus” Instagram handle demonstrates the lack of comfort that many Jewish students at Rutgers feel beyond this single occurrence.

To the Jewish community at Rutgers: despite this act of hate and ignorance, please know that the Hindu student community of North America stands with you firmly in support.

Namaste and Shalom,

Hindu Students Council
