HSC Congratulates Congress woman Tulsi Gabbard

Tulsi Gabbard's election to the US Congress serves as an inpiration to Hindu Students

Hindu Students Council offers its heartiest congratulations to newly elected Tulsi Gabbard (D) for her victory in Hawaii's 2nd Congressional District. Gabbard's election is particularly inspiring for Hindu students currently studying American politics and aspire to careers in the United States government as elected officials.

"Great strides are made with the election of Tulsi Gabbard to congress. This will set a wonderful example for many more Hindu voices and women to be heard in American politics," said HSC President Priya Radhakrishnan.

Born to a Catholic father and a Hindu mother, Gabbard chose to embrace Hinduism as a teenager. She defeated Kawika Crowley (R), which makes Gabbard the first Hindu to be elected to US Congress.

"I think the Hindu community will realize that although they are a minority in the United States, this is a big step in both the understanding and eventually acceptance of Indian heritage and values. And perhaps they will be more inclined to join or participate in various government/local forums," said Vivek Jaishanker, a member of the Rutgers University Hindu Students Council chapter. "It's very heartening to be able to look up to someone who serves in political office and is not afraid to say she is Hindu," he added.
